Canadian Bill C-22 (Lawful Access Act)
I am against the Canadian Bill C-22 (the Lawful Access Act). I will not comply with its provisions, even under court order, and I am willing to accept prison rather than surrender private or sensitive information to the government.
Why:
• This bill authorizes mass surveillance, turning everyday devices into tools for state monitoring.
• It mandates government-ordered backdoors into encryption, undermining security for everyone.
• It erodes the reasonable expectation of privacy guaranteed by Section 8 of the Charter.
The bill would force companies to build direct access for law enforcement and CSIS, require the collection and storage of metadata including device location for up to one year, and empower the Minister of Public Safety to order the breaking of encryption.
Public polling shows 83% of Canadians fear this would increase fraud and cybercrime, 73% worry it would chill free speech, and 54% believe the security risks outweigh any law enforcement benefits. Privacy experts warn that built-in government access points create risks of abuse and data breaches.
A free society depends on strong protections against government overreach. Bill C-22 undermines those protections, criminalizes privacy, and puts every Canadian at risk. This is unacceptable.
